fitting. Why ‘just a 10 bolt’? This is not a repair
to the skinny little piece that came in the car. This is a replacement rear-
end that is drastically stronger in every way. To solve the problem of rear-end
breakage in these cars we looked at what was breaking. Since it seemed to be
everything this meant that stronger housing, gears, posi and axles were all
required. How strong is it? The 8.5” ring gear rear end is a strong, time tested
performer. Its weakest link is probably the spider gears, followed by the axles
in “extreme” (i.e. racing) conditions. We have improved the posi by simply replacing
it with a new, hugely strengthened Eaton positraction unit and the axles by
installing new 12 bolt 30 spline axles. Why not 33 spline axles? We are primarily
offering a piece for streetable (race) cars. It is not designed or intended
for back-halved type cars and so that large an axle is simply not required.
If this is a worry, why not rifle-drilled 40 spline axles or the diff out of
a small Kenworth…. simply not required to get the job done. Keep in mind every
customer has an ‘improved’ engine and drivetrain and this rear-end assembly
is the finishing touch. Why the suspension as well? We have noticed that the
other big problem, apart from breakage, is the lack of traction in these cars.
These cars were set up ‘soft’ from the factory to lighten the loads on the powertrain
(and hence the warranty) and also to make the car seem more powerful than they
were (some people are impressed by tire smoke, others by winning races). The
Global West system allows us to address the ‘hook’ and the handling at the same
time, and provide our customers with proven performance in both areas. This
also helps the life of the differential, as ‘come and go traction’ (suspension
loading and unloading) is harder on parts than ’hook’.
